Thursday is the sixth annual international Rare Disease Day, a day to raise awareness amongst the public and decision-makers about the challenges faced by those with rare diseases. In the United States, a rare disease is defined as a disease that affects fewer than 200,000 people. There are over 6,000 identified rare diseases and nearly thirty million Americans suffer from one.
