On New Year's Eve, like many of you, I toasted to good health in 2016. A new year offers the opportunity to reflect on the strides made toward improving our lives and the lives of those around us. And, we can use this time to think about ways to continue this momentum in the year ahead. As I look forward to a year brimming with opportunity and hope, here are some of my top health care aspirations:
Make Medicine More Accessible
The Campaign for Modern Medicines (CMM) works to ensure people get the treatment they need for as long as they need it. CMM supports and promotes policies that can make this goal a reality for every American patient. Programs like Medicare, and specifically its prescription benefit Medicare Part D, helped millions of seniors access the prescriptions necessary to maintain healthy lifestyles in 2015. I'm counting on more of the same in 2016.
CMM is a community of advocates that works to further the progress of many key health care initiatives. We attribute our success in 2015 to the dedicated, passionate, outspoken supporters like you. This year, you'll be just as important in our efforts to uphold patient safety and foster the creation of innovative medicines. Increase the Patient Voice
Patients are one of the most important groups involved in the discovery of an effective new treatment. Their first-hand perspective leads to high quality, effective medicines. Engaging with patient communities and disease activists helps doctors, scientists and regulators do their jobs. Programs like the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) center on patient focused drug development. Patient meetings with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began again in 2015, with more to follow in 2016. To learn more, you can view updates from the FDA here or read our discussions on PDUFA VI, slated for renewal in 2017.
We have so many health care goals to look forward to in the next 12 months. I'm excited to get started and have you join us! Happy New Year from all of us at CMM.
